Cardinals Outlast Diamondbacks in a Close Encounter at Busch Stadium

The St. Louis Cardinals, now with a 10-13 record, edged out the Arizona Diamondbacks, who fell to 11-13, in a closely contested game that ended 5-3. The Cardinals' performance was marked by resilience and timely hitting as they overcame an early deficit to secure the victory.

The game began with both teams' defenses holding strong, as neither team managed to score in the first four innings. However, the Diamondbacks broke through in the second inning with two runs off three hits. They extended their lead to three runs by adding another run in the fifth inning.


In response, the Cardinals ignited their offense in the sixth inning when they scored two runs on one hit. The seventh inning saw them add another run off three hits to tie up the game. It was not until the ninth inning that St. Louis took control; they scored two decisive runs on two hits.

Cardinals' hitters showed discipline at the plate throughout this matchup; they achieved an on-base percentage of thirty-three percent and slugging percentage of .448 while leaving eleven runners on base (LOB). Their ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities was evident as they recorded five runs batted in (RBI) and hit one out of five with runners in scoring position (RISP).


On defense, St. Louis showcased a flawless fielding performance with no errors and eight assists contributing to their perfect fielding percentage of 1.0 across thirty-five total chances (TC). The bullpen also played a pivotal role for them; it pitched four scoreless innings allowing only two hits which translated into an earned run average (ERA) of zero and walks plus hits per innings pitched (WHIP) of .75.
