Sonny Gray's pitching was instrumental in securing this victory for St. Louis Cardinals; he finished with an earned run average (ERA) of 2.571 and a walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) rate of 0.7143 over seven innings pitched, striking out six batters along his way to winning this crucial matchup.


On Tampa Bay's side, their resilience was evident as they attempted a late rally in the ninth inning by adding one run to their tally but ultimately fell short against St. Louis' bullpen where Andrew Kittredge showcased his skill with an ERA at zero and nine strikeouts per nine innings ratio indicating no runs allowed during his time on mound.
