Cubs' Struggle Continues: Chicago Falls to Mets in Low-Scoring Affair at Citi Field

The Chicago Cubs faced off against the New York Mets in a game that ended with a 4-2 loss for the visiting team. This outcome brings the Cubs' season record to 18-12, while the Mets improved to 15-14. Despite both teams having a close number of hits, with the Cubs managing 4 and the Mets 7, errors on Chicago's part played a significant role in their defeat.

From the beginning, it was clear that hitting was going to be an uphill battle for the Cubs. They finished with a batting average of .138 and were only able to convert those hits into runs during two innings. The second inning saw their first run thanks to one hit but no errors from their side, while another run came in during the ninth inning under similar circumstances. Their performance on base was slightly better, achieving an on-base percentage of .278 and managing six walks throughout the game.

On defense, however, things did not go as smoothly for Chicago. The team committed two errors over nine innings - both throwing errors - which contributed significantly to their loss. These mistakes underscored challenges in fielding that need addressing if they hope to improve their standing this season.

The pitching staff had mixed results; while starters posted an earned run average (ERA) of 1.8 over five innings pitched, indicating a relatively solid performance allowing only one earned run and five hits against twenty batters faced (BF), bullpen pitchers struggled more noticeably by giving up three unearned runs due largely to defensive missteps behind them.

For New York's part, key players stepped up when needed most notably in the sixth inning where they scored three runs off two hits and capitalized on one error by Chicago's defense. Sean Reid-Foley secured his first win of the season for his efforts from the mound for New York.
