The game unfolded at Great American Ball Park, where both teams battled under partly cloudy skies with temperatures around 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite a valiant effort, the Cubs could not overcome an early deficit, managing to score four runs on five hits without committing any errors throughout the game. Their scoring efforts were highlighted in the third and sixth innings, where they put two runs on the board during each inning.

The Cubs' offense struggled to find its rhythm against the Reds' pitching staff. With a batting average of .156 for this game, they left ten runners on base and had a slugging percentage of .406. Notably, two home runs contributed significantly to their run total but it wasn't enough to secure a win. On-base plus slugging (OPS) stood at .656 as they tried to mount their comeback.

On the pitching side, Chicago's bullpen faced challenges as evidenced by an ERA of 11.571 over 2.1 innings pitched by relievers who inherited six runners and allowed four earned runs. The starting pitcher also had difficulties containing Cincinnati's hitters, ending with an ERA of 7.941 over nearly six innings pitched.

Conversely, The Cincinnati Reds capitalized on their opportunities by scoring eight runs on nine hits throughout nine innings played without committing any errors either defensively or offensively which proved crucial for their victory.
