Cubs' Late Rally Not Enough to Overcome Cardinals' Early Lead in St. Louis

The game started unfavorably for the Cubs as they found themselves trailing early on due to a high-scoring inning from the Cardinals, who secured nine runs in the first inning alone, aided by two errors from the Cubs. Despite this rough start, the Cubs managed to put up three runs over nine innings on seven hits but were unable to close the significant gap created by their rivals.

Patrick Wisdom and Seiya Suzuki stood out for the Cubs with notable performances. Wisdom hit .500 including a home run and contributed one RBI, showcasing his power at critical moments. Suzuki also made his presence felt with a .250 batting average and added another home run to his season tally, driving in one run as well.

On the mound for Chicago was Hayden Wesneski who struggled through his appearance with an ERA of 9.0 across four innings pitched, allowing an OBP of .462 against him which contributed significantly to the early deficit faced by his team.

The bullpen saw some resilience with Hunter Bigge and Ethan Roberts providing scoreless relief efforts. Bigge impressed with an ERA of 0.0 and striking out batters at an impressive rate of 18 K/9 while Roberts maintained an ERA of 0.0 and K/9 of 13.5 during their time on the mound.
