Cubs Stumble at Citi Field as Mets' Eighth-Inning Burst Seals Victory

The Chicago Cubs faced off against the New York Mets at Citi Field, resulting in a 6-2 defeat for the Cubbies. This game brought their record to 23-18, while the Mets improved to 26-15. The Cubs struggled offensively with only three hits throughout the game.

Cubs' Offensive Struggles

The Cubs had difficulty finding their rhythm at the plate, managing just three hits over nine innings. Despite a promising start by Matthew Boyd, who maintained an ERA of 3.0 and struck out eight batters over six innings, Chicago's offense couldn't capitalize on his efforts. Dansby Swanson contributed with a hit but was unable to spark a rally for his team.

Nico Hoerner provided one of the few bright spots for Chicago's lineup with an RBI double in the sixth inning that put them on the scoreboard. However, this was not enough to overcome their overall lackluster performance at bat.

Mets' Eighth-Inning Surge

The Mets took advantage of opportunities late in the game, particularly during an explosive eighth inning where they scored four runs on five hits against Chicago's bullpen. The North Side pitchers struggled significantly during this frame; Porter Hodge and Gavin Hollowell were unable to contain New York’s hitters effectively.

New York’s Pete Alonso played a pivotal role by hitting one of two home runs that contributed significantly towards sealing victory for his team—his power-hitting prowess proving too much for Chicago’s relief pitching staff which allowed six earned runs across eight innings pitched collectively between starters and relievers alike.
