Cubs' Extra-Inning Magic Sinks Pirates at Wrigley Field

First Inning

The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates faced off in a tightly contested game at Wrigley Field. The Cubs, with a record of 44-28, managed to edge out the Pirates, who now stand at 29-44, in a nail-biting 3-2 victory that extended into extra innings. The game was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of 40,162 fans.

The action began with the Pirates taking an early lead in the first inning. They scored two runs on three hits against Cubs' starter Colin Rea. Despite this early setback, Rea managed to settle down and prevent further damage throughout his six innings on the mound.

Second Inning to Eighth Inning

As the game progressed into the second inning and beyond, both teams struggled offensively. The Cubs were unable to capitalize on their opportunities during these middle innings despite having runners in scoring positions multiple times. Their bats remained relatively quiet until late in the game.

On defense, however, Chicago's bullpen was stellar after Rea's departure. Ryan Pressly and Génesis Cabrera combined for four scoreless innings of relief work that kept Pittsburgh from extending their lead any further.

Ninth Inning

In what seemed like a last chance effort during regulation playtime (the ninth inning), Ian Happ stepped up for Chicago with crucial contributions that helped tie things up at two apiece before heading into extra frames—his performance included one hit out of four attempts along with one run batted-in (RBI).

Tenth Inning

The tenth inning saw heightened tension as both teams vied desperately for victory; ultimately it was Justin Turner who delivered when needed most: driving home Pete Crow-Armstrong from third base via sacrifice fly which secured another win under Cubbies’ belt!
