The match was characterized by strong pitching performances from both sides. The Diamondbacks' pitchers collectively maintained an impressive earned run average (ERA) of 0.964 across 9.1 innings pitched, striking out seven batters and holding the Cubs to a batting average of just .125. Starter Brandon Pfaadt stood out with an ERA of 0.0 over seven innings, allowing only one hit and achieving nine strikeouts which significantly contributed to keeping the Diamondbacks competitive throughout.

However, Arizona's offense struggled against Chicago's pitchers, managing only two hits and one run over ten innings. Eugenio Suárez provided a glimmer of hope with a solo home run that accounted for Arizona's lone run in the seventh inning. Randal Grichuk also made his presence felt with a batting average of .333 and an on-base percentage (OBP) of .500 for the game.

Despite these efforts, it wasn't enough as Chicago managed to secure two runs in the latter part of the game including one in their final at-bat during extra innings to seal their victory.

Fielding was another area where both teams excelled; neither committed any errors throughout this defensively tight contest. This aspect further highlighted how closely matched these two teams were during this encounter.
