Will the Mets Clip the Cardinals' Wings at Citi Field?

As the New York Mets gear up to face the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field, fans are left pondering whether their team can bounce back from recent setbacks. The Mets have had a turbulent time of late, with their last game against the Detroit Tigers on April 1st ending in a 5-0 loss during extra innings. Despite out-hitting the Tigers with 5 hits to 4, a costly error and inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities left them scoreless.

The statistics paint a concerning picture for NYM's offense. With an overall batting average of just .147 and zero runs batted in (RBI), it's clear that clutch hitting has been absent from their game. Their on-base plus slugging (OPS) stood at an underwhelming .413, and they failed to convert any of their six at-bats with runners in scoring position (RISP). The bullpen held its own until unearned runs in extra innings tipped the scales.

In contrast, during their March 31st encounter with Milwaukee Brewers, NYM showed more promise despite another loss of 4-1. They managed seven hits but again struggled with runners in scoring position, only converting once out of four attempts. A slightly improved OPS of .515 indicated some offensive life but not enough to secure victory.

However, there is a silver lining when looking back at NYM's performance against MIL on March 30th – they tallied six runs off twelve hits including three home runs which contributed to an impressive OPS of .919 for that game alone. This shows that while consistency is an issue, potential for powerful offense exists within this squad.

Defensively speaking, NYM has been relatively solid apart from sporadic errors which have proven costly. Their fielding percentage across these games hovered around .970 – not perfect but indicative of generally reliable defense.

The Cardinals will be no easy opponent; they come into this matchup well-rested and ready for battle. However, if NYM can harness some of that offensive firepower shown intermittently over past games while tightening up defensively and avoiding errors at critical moments – there’s every chance they could triumph over STL.
