Mets' Early Lead Overturned by Cubs in Late Rally at Citi Field

The game began promisingly for the Mets, who capitalized on their first scoring opportunity. A home run in the first inning put them ahead, sparking enthusiasm among fans at Citi Field. However, despite out-hitting the Cubs with four hits to three, they struggled to convert these opportunities into runs.

Edwin Díaz of the Mets pitched valiantly but ultimately recorded his first loss of the season after allowing two runs in a nail-biting ninth inning. The bullpen's performance was pivotal as Mark Leiter Jr., from Chicago's side, secured his first win while Héctor Neris notched his fourth save.

Defensively, both teams played error-free baseball throughout nine innings. The Mets displayed solid fielding with eight assists and one double play contributing to their perfect fielding percentage.

At bat, New York's hitters faced challenges as they struck out three times and left six runners on base during critical moments of play. Their lone run batted in (RBI) came from that solo home run which briefly gave them an edge over Chicago.

Onbase percentages told a story of missed chances for both teams; however, it was particularly evident for New York who managed an onbase percentage (OBP) of .206 compared to Chicago's .188 OBP. Despite this slight advantage and stealing one base successfully without getting caught, it wasn't enough to secure victory.

Looking ahead after this tough loss at home soil under partly cloudy skies with temperatures hovering around 68 degrees Fahrenheit during game time lasting 2 hours and 5 minutes before an attendance crowd of 25,046 fans – The next scheduled game for the Mets will be against these same Chicago Cubs at Citi Field on April 30th at 7:10 PM Eastern Time.
