Nationals' Pitching Holds Strong, But Orioles' Fifth-Inning Burst Seals the Game at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals faced off against the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park in a closely contested game that ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of the Orioles. This result brought the Nationals to an 11-14 record, while the Orioles improved to 10-14. Despite a strong pitching performance from Washington, Baltimore's decisive fifth inning proved to be the difference-maker.

Pitching Dominance

The Nationals showcased impressive pitching throughout most of the game. Starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore delivered a solid performance with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.0 and maintained a walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) of 0.8333 over six innings. He struck out eight batters and allowed only four hits during his time on the mound, demonstrating his ability to keep opposing hitters off balance.

Washington's bullpen continued this trend by not allowing any runs in their three innings of work. Jose A. Ferrer was particularly effective, maintaining an ERA of 0.0 and striking out five batters across three innings without conceding any hits or walks.

Orioles Capitalize on Key Moment

Despite being held scoreless for much of the game by Washington's pitchers, Baltimore capitalized on their opportunities in the fifth inning when they scored two runs off three hits against Gore. This burst was enough to secure their victory as they managed to hold onto this lead for the remainder of the contest.

Offensively for Washington, Keibert Ruiz contributed one hit from four at-bats with an on-base percentage (OBP) of .250 but could not spark more significant rallies against Baltimore’s defense.
