First Inning

The opening inning set the tone for what would be a defensive battle. The Cubs managed to get three hits off starter MacKenzie Gore but failed to convert any into runs. Gore's precision pitching was evident as he maintained control and composure, preventing any early scoring opportunities for the North Side.

Middle Innings

As the game progressed through innings two to five, both teams struggled offensively. The Nats were unable to register any hits until CJ Abrams broke through in the sixth inning with a single that injected some life into their lineup. Despite this effort, it wasn't until later that they would capitalize on their opportunities.

Seventh Inning

The seventh inning proved pivotal for Washington as they finally broke the deadlock. Amed Rosario's timely hit brought home Riley Adams from second base after he had reached on a walk and advanced on Nathaniel Lowe's groundout. This run gave Washington a slender lead which they looked determined to protect.

Eighth Inning

In the eighth inning, James Wood added an insurance run with his first home run of the season—a solo shot that soared over left field—extending Washington’s lead to two runs. This display of power provided much-needed breathing room for their bullpen heading into the final stretch of play.

Ninth Inning

Kyle Finnegan took over pitching duties in ninth inning and successfully closed out Chicago’s attempts at mounting a comeback by securing three outs without allowing any further hits or walks—earning himself his first save of this campaign while preserving Gore’s win.
