Padres' Sixth-Inning Surge Sinks Yankees at PETCO Park
The San Diego Padres improved their record to 28-28 with a decisive 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees, who now stand at 37-18. The game, held at PETCO Park, saw the Padres capitalize on a pivotal sixth inning to secure the win.
The first five innings were marked by strong pitching and defense from both teams. The Yankees managed only three hits in these innings while keeping the Padres scoreless despite two hits in the third inning. However, it was in the sixth inning that San Diego broke through.
The Padres' offense came alive with three hits and four runs in this crucial frame. This offensive burst was highlighted by timely hitting and capitalizing on a rare error by New York's defense. San Diego added another run in the seventh inning, bringing their total to five runs off nine hits for the game.
On the mound, San Diego's bullpen was particularly effective. They faced 15 batters and struck out seven while allowing just one run over 3⅔ innings of work. Jeremiah Estrada earned his second win of the season with solid relief pitching, while Robert Suarez secured his fifteenth save.
New York's offense struggled throughout most of the game but managed to score single runs in both the sixth and ninth innings. Despite accumulating eight hits overall, they couldn't string together enough offense to overcome San Diego’s lead.
Clarke Schmidt took his third loss for New York after giving up four earned runs during his outing. The Yankees’ bullpen also allowed one additional run but kept things relatively close until late in the game.
San Diego’s fielding was flawless throughout; they committed no errors compared to New York’s one miscue that proved costly during that critical sixth inning rally by San Diego.
Next up for San Diego is another home game against Miami Marlins scheduled for May 27th at PETCO Park starting at 10:40 PM Eastern Time (7:40 PM Pacific Time). Fans can catch all action live on SDPA network.
