Rockies Shut Out in Mesa: Athletics Seize Victory with Explosive Fifth Inning

In a recent preseason encounter at Hohokam Stadium, the Colorado Rockies faced a challenging game against the Oakland Athletics, concluding with the Rockies unable to score, marking their performance at 2-1 for the season. The Athletics capitalized on their opportunities to secure a 4-0 victory, improving their record to 1-1.

Rockies' Struggle at the Plate

The Rockies struggled offensively throughout the game, managing only four hits and failing to convert any scoring opportunities. Despite reaching base multiple times, including four instances due to walks, they left five runners on base and were unsuccessful in all four of their attempts with runners in scoring position. The team's overall batting average was a mere .143 for the game, highlighting their difficulties in generating offensive momentum.

Notably, Sterlin Thompson was one of the few bright spots for the Rockies, achieving a perfect batting average by securing a hit in his sole at-bat. Keston Hiura and Owen Miller each contributed with hits as well, both posting batting averages of .333 for this contest.

Athletics' Decisive Fifth Inning

The turning point of the game came during an explosive fifth inning by the Athletics who managed to break through with four runs off three hits. This sudden burst of offense proved insurmountable for Colorado. The Athletics demonstrated efficient hitting and took advantage of seven walks issued by Rockies pitchers over nine innings.

Colorado's pitching staff encountered challenges throughout this matchup. Kenneth Hill had an especially tough outing from the mound with an earned run average (ERA) soaring to 54 after allowing three runs without recording any outs. Conversely, Ryan Rolison showed promise by striking out nine batters across his appearance while maintaining an ERA of 0.

Looking Ahead

The Colorado Rockies will look forward to bouncing back from this setback as they prepare for their next preseason game against Milwaukee Brewers at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale on February 23rd at 3:10 PM EDT.
