The Yankees started strong defensively, holding the Padres scoreless through five innings. Clarke Schmidt pitched effectively for New York, allowing only three hits and one earned run over five innings. However, it was in the sixth inning that things began to unravel for the Yankees.

In that pivotal sixth inning, the Padres managed to break through with four runs on three hits and one error by New York. This surge was enough to put San Diego ahead significantly. Despite this setback, Schmidt's overall performance remained commendable as he struck out six batters.

Offensively for New York, Aaron Judge contributed significantly with two hits in four at-bats but was unable to drive in any runs. The Yankees' first run came in the sixth inning when Gleyber Torres hit a double and later scored on an RBI single by Anthony Rizzo.

The bullpen struggled for New York as they allowed three more runs across two innings of work. Despite their efforts to contain San Diego's offense after Schmidt exited the game, they couldn't prevent further damage.
