Dallas Mavericks dig out of a 40-point first-quarter hole as the Atlanta Hawks close it out at State Farm Arena

The Dallas Mavericks entered at 21-44 and left State Farm Arena with a 124-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, who moved to 34-31 after the 7:30 PM EDT tip.

First quarter


The Dallas Mavericks scored 26 in the opening quarter while the Hawks poured in 40 as Atlanta created early separation with 1 lead change and 1 time tied.


The Mavs committed 14 turnovers in the game and Atlanta converted those mistakes into 21 points off turnovers to fuel the early swing.


Second quarter


The Mavs put up 27 in the second quarter, and Cooper Flagg logged 14 points with 12 rebounds to keep Dallas attached while Atlanta added 24.


Dallas got lift from 57 bench points, and Brandon Williams contributed 13 points with 5 assists as the Big D second unit helped stabilize the half.


Atlanta’s activity at the rim showed up in 8 blocks, and the Hawks’ defense also produced 8 steals across the night.


Third quarter


Dallas delivered its best stretch with 38 in the third quarter, and Klay Thompson’s 21 points on 46 percent from 3-point range anchored the push.


The Mavs also stacked 28 assists and shot 41 percent from 3-point range overall, but the Hawks answered with 31 in the quarter to protect the margin.


Atlanta kept pressure on the paint with 60 points in the paint, and its 59 percent on 2-point shots held up against Dallas’ 48 paint points.


Fourth quarter


The Mavs scored 21 in the fourth quarter while the Hawks posted 29, and Dallas’ 49 total rebounds could not erase Atlanta’s 53 on the glass.


Daniel Gafford added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Dallas, but Atlanta’s 26 fast break points on 12 attempts kept the home side in control.
