The game started positively for the Fighting Illini as they took an early lead in the first quarter with seven points to none from the Hawkeyes. However, momentum shifted as Iowa responded with 13 points in the second quarter while holding Illinois to another seven. The third quarter saw a defensive battle; however, Iowa managed to extend their lead by eight points without any response from Illinois. In a final push during the fourth quarter, both teams scored seven points each but it wasn't enough for Illinois to close the gap.

The Fighting Illini's offense accumulated a total of 340 yards throughout the game. Their passing game contributed 199 yards with an average of about six yards per attempt and three touchdowns; all three touchdowns were achieved through air strikes including their longest touchdown of 29 yards. On ground efforts resulted in 149 rushing yards over 38 attempts averaging almost four yards per carry.

Special teams had mixed results; while there were no blocked punts or punt returns for touchdowns, they managed two kickoffs landing inside opponent's twenty-yard line and one touchback out of four kickoffs totaling two hundred yards.

Defensively speaking, Illinois showed resilience sacking opposing quarterbacks twice and achieving two tackles for loss. Despite these efforts and maintaining possession time slightly under thirty minutes, it was not enough to secure victory over a determined Iowa team.
