The home team, Michigan State Spartans, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game. Despite a total offensive effort that yielded 376 yards, turnovers proved costly for the Spartans. They committed five turnovers during the game which included three interceptions and two lost fumbles. The passing offense managed to complete 26 passes on 45 attempts for a total of 274 yards and one touchdown pass of nine yards. However, they were sacked three times which resulted in a loss of yardage.

On the ground, Michigan State's rushing attack was limited to an average of just over three yards per carry with their longest run being only nineteen yards. They attempted thirty-one rushes for a total gain of 102 yards but failed to reach the end zone via rush plays.

Special teams had mixed results; while they successfully made one field goal from thirty-seven yards out and blocked another attempt, they missed an extra point try and had fifty percent success on field goals overall.

Defensively, Michigan State managed one interception but could not capitalize on it as there were no return yards gained from it. Penalties also hindered their performance with six infractions costing them seventy penalty yards.

In contrast, Maryland capitalized on opportunities presented by Spartan mistakes and built up their lead steadily through each quarter except for the third where both teams held each other scoreless.

Looking ahead after this tough home defeat at Spartan Stadium turf before an attendance of over seventy thousand fans, Michigan State will turn its focus toward its next opponent. The upcoming game is set against Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on September 30th at approximately 6:30 PM local time (11:30 PM UTC).
