Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders: Can They Bounce Back After Ole Miss Rout?

In a challenging showdown at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders were handed a significant defeat by the Ole Miss Rebels, with the scoreboard displaying a stark 3-52 in favor of the hosts. This outcome shifts the Blue Raiders to an even 1-1 for the season, while propelling Ole Miss to a perfect 2-0 start.

The contest was characterized by notable differences in execution on both offense and defense. The Blue Raiders could only muster three points via a field goal, in stark contrast to the Rebels' commanding 52 points. Despite their best efforts, Middle Tennessee found it difficult to establish any momentum during the game.

In terms of special teams performance, Grant Chadwick and Trey Turk took on punting responsibilities for Middle Tennessee, accumulating six punts for an aggregate of 234 yards and successfully landing two within the opponent's 20-yard line. Zeke Rankin nailed his only field goal attempt from 32 yards out, securing his team's lone score.

On defense, Middle Tennessee displayed sporadic resilience but was ultimately unable to halt Ole Miss's potent offense. Jordan Thompson was a highlight on defense with one sack and one tackle for loss among his total of three tackles. Brendon Harris led in solo tackles with ten and added one tackle for loss as well. John Howse IV also made significant contributions by forcing a fumble along with four tackles and an assist on another.

Offensively speaking, Nicholas Vattiato connected on 21 out of his 33 pass attempts amassing 209 yards but suffered one interception without managing any touchdowns. The ground attack faced stiff resistance from Ole Miss's defensive front; Terry Wilkins managed just nineteen yards over seven carries as part of an overall ineffective rushing effort that totaled twenty-eight yards across twenty-five carries.

Holden Willis proved himself as Vattiato’s primary receiver catching seven passes for ninety-four yards yet did not secure any touchdowns despite several opportunities within scoring distance.

As they turn their focus from this challenging encounter against Ole Miss Rebels, Middle Tennessee is set to regroup swiftly as they gear up to welcome Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro come September 14th at 7:00 PM EDT.
