Notre Dame's passing game complemented their rushing attack well. Quarterback play resulted in three touchdowns through the air with an overall completion percentage rounded to seventy-five percent from eighteen completions out of twenty-four attempts. These passes accounted for eleven first downs and totaled one hundred seventy-four passing yards.

Defensively, Notre Dame was just as formidable. They recorded seven sacks totaling thirty-three sack yards lost by Virginia and six tackles for loss which pushed back Virginia by thirty-five yards cumulatively. Moreover, two interceptions by Notre Dame added fourteen return yards to their tally.


Special teams also played its part; although there were no blocked punts or returns for touchdowns, Notre Dame managed to keep their punts efficient with one attempt resulting in net yardage equaling thirty-four.

The Cavaliers struggled throughout the contest against this stout defense and could only manage three points scored during the fourth quarter while being held scoreless across all other periods.
