The Panthers' game began with promise as they matched the Tar Heels point for point in the first quarter, each team securing 7 points. However, as the game progressed into the second quarter, Pittsburgh found themselves outpaced by North Carolina's aggressive play which resulted in a 21-10 lead for the visitors by halftime. Despite a spirited effort from Pittsburgh in the third quarter adding another 7 points to their tally, they were unable to score in the fourth quarter while North Carolina amassed an additional 13 points before that.

Pittsburgh's defense managed to sack North Carolina's quarterback five times and recorded six quarterback hits throughout the game. The defensive line also contributed with seven tackles for loss totaling a loss of 32 yards for North Carolina. Special teams had their moment too when they blocked one kick.

On offense, Pittsburgh's ground game was productive with two rushing touchdowns and an average of over four yards per carry on their way to accumulating a total of 110 rushing yards. Their longest rush was an impressive run of 23 yards but it was special teams that provided one of Pittsburgh’s highlights – a dazzling kickoff return touchdown that covered an entire length of hundred yards.

In terms of discipline, penalties were an issue for Pittsburgh; they incurred eleven penalties amounting to eighty-four penalty yards which hindered some drives and gave away crucial first downs.
