Despite their efforts, the Hokies could not overcome the Tar Heels' lead throughout the game. The first quarter concluded with a slight edge for the home team as they led by four points. However, by halftime, that lead expanded significantly with an additional 17 points scored by North Carolina against seven from Virginia Tech.
