Hokies' Heartbreak in Syracuse: Virginia Tech Falls Short in Overtime

In a closely contested battle at the JMA Wireless Dome, the Virginia Tech Hokies faced off against the Syracuse Orange in what turned out to be an intense Week 10 matchup. The Hokies, with a record of 5-4, were narrowly defeated by the Orange, who improved their season to 6-2, with a final score of 31-38.

Game Highlights


The game kicked off with Virginia Tech setting an aggressive tone early on. The Hokies managed to put up 14 points in the first quarter while keeping Syracuse scoreless. However, momentum shifted as the game progressed. By halftime, Syracuse had begun to claw back into contention with a field goal that brought the score to 14-3.


The third quarter saw a significant push from Syracuse, adding 15 points to their tally against Virginia Tech's seven. Heading into the final quarter, tensions were high as both teams fought hard on both sides of the ball. The Hokies managed an additional ten points in this period but couldn't prevent Syracuse from scoring thirteen themselves.


Overtime was where hearts were broken for Virginia Tech fans as they watched their team concede seven points without managing to add any further scores themselves.


Player Performances


Quarterback Collin Schlee was notable for his contributions despite the loss. He threw for 206 yards and achieved one touchdown pass with a completion percentage of approximately 67 percent and an average of nine yards per attempt. His efforts were complemented on the ground by Jeremiah Coney and Malachi Thomas; Coney rushed for an impressive 96 yards while Thomas added another touchdown alongside his own tally of 73 rushing yards.


On defense, Mansoor Delane stood out by securing an interception and forcing a fumble which he also recovered—highlighting his defensive prowess throughout this tightly contested game.


Peter Moore's punting was another positive takeaway for Virginia Tech; he punted five times over a total distance of 214 yards and successfully landed two within Syracuse's twenty-yard line.
