Cowboys Corral Vikings at Jonah Field in Week 2 Football Showdown
The Wyoming Cowboys continued their undefeated streak with a 2-0 record after securing a victory over the Portland State Vikings, who fell to 0-2. The final score stood at 31-17 in favor of the home team.
At Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium, the Cowboys demonstrated a solid performance on both sides of the ball. The offense accumulated a total of 371 yards, with an impressive average gain of 6.7 yards per play. The passing game was particularly effective, as the quarterback completed 11 out of 16 attempts for a total of 201 yards and three touchdowns. One pass connected for a remarkable longest touchdown completion of 64 yards.
The rushing attack also contributed significantly to the offensive output with an additional 170 yards on the ground over 39 attempts, including one touchdown run that covered just one yard but was crucial nonetheless. This balanced attack helped secure ten first downs through rushing efforts.
Defensively, Wyoming's prowess was evident as they sacked Portland State's quarterback four times and recorded eight tackles for loss. They also forced two turnovers during the game – one interception returned for ten yards and one fumble recovery that halted Vikings' progress.
Special teams played their part too; Wyoming's kicker successfully converted all four extra point attempts and nailed a field goal from an impressive distance of 56 yards.
Portland State struggled to keep pace with Wyoming throughout most parts of the game but managed to put up ten points in the second quarter which included seven points from scoring plays over fifty yards.
As fans look ahead, they can mark their calendars for September 17 when Wyoming Cowboys will face off against Texas Longhorns at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin.
