Can the Sun Devils Rebound After a Tough Loss to the Cardinal?
In a closely contested conference game, the Arizona State Sun Devils fell short against the Stanford Cardinal with a final score of 71-62. The Sun Devils now stand at an even record, while the Cardinal improved their standing. Despite a strong start by Arizona State, leading at halftime with 33 points to Stanford's 29, they couldn't maintain their momentum in the second half where they were outscored by 13 points.
The Desert Financial Arena in Tempe witnessed an intense battle where lead changes occurred 13 times and scores were tied on five occasions. The home crowd of 7,234 fans saw their team put up a valiant effort but ultimately fail to capitalize on key moments. The Sun Devils showcased aggressive defense with nine steals and blocked three shots from the Cardinal. However, this defensive tenacity was slightly overshadowed by committing more personal fouls than their opponents—15 compared to Stanford's 13.
Offensively, Arizona State struggled from beyond the arc; converting only eight of their thirty-two three-point attempts which amounted to just twenty-five percent accuracy. Their field goal percentage stood at thirty-eight percent as they made twenty-three out of sixty attempts. Inside scoring was more effective for them as they made fifteen out of twenty-eight two-point shots—a fifty-four percent success rate—and scored twenty-six points in paint.
The team's assist-to-turnover ratio was higher than that of Stanford at 1.3 thanks to thirteen assists against eleven turnovers for Arizona State compared to fourteen turnovers for Stanford which had an assist-to-turnover ratio of just over one. Despite these efforts, it wasn't enough as Stanford capitalized on eighteen second-chance points and scored eight points off turnovers.
Looking ahead after this setback, fans can mark their calendars for when Arizona State will take on California Golden Bears next week on February third at one o'clock PM Mountain Standard Time (MST). This upcoming game will be held once again at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe and broadcasted live on Pac-12 Network for supporters unable to attend in person.
