Cougars Overcome Aztecs at Marriott Center in a Display of Skill and Determination

The BYU Cougars, with an unranked status, faced off against the 17th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs at the Marriott Center. The Cougars emerged victorious with a final score of 74-65 over the Aztecs. The home team's record now stands at an impressive 1-0 while the visiting team holds a record of 0-1.

In front of a crowd of 15,689 spectators, the BYU Cougars showcased their determination and skill on their home court. The game was marked by several lead changes—a total of nine throughout—and was tied six times, indicating a closely contested battle between both teams.


The Cougars' offense was firing on all cylinders as they managed to sink ten three-pointers out of twenty-seven attempts, translating to an impressive three-point percentage rounded to thirty-seven percent. Their overall field goal percentage stood at forty-three percent with twenty-six successful shots out of sixty-one attempts. From the free-throw line, they maintained composure and accuracy by making twelve out of sixteen shots for an excellent free throw percentage rounded to seventy-five percent.


On defense, BYU showed resilience by amassing forty-two rebounds—seven offensive and thirty-five defensive—alongside two blocks for the night. They also recorded six steals which contributed to eleven points off turnovers.


The San Diego State Aztecs put up a strong fight despite falling short in this contest. They made five three-pointers from eighteen attempts which gave them a three-point shooting percentage rounded to twenty-eight percent. Their field goal shooting was slightly better than that from beyond the arc with forty-five percent accuracy on fifty-eight attempts.


Defensively, SDSU gathered thirty-two rebounds—four offensive and twenty-eight defensive—and executed eleven steals leading to ten points off turnovers. However, their efforts were not enough as they could not contain BYU's fast-paced offense which resulted in seventeen fast break points for the home team compared to eight for SDSU.
