BYU Cougars Narrowly Edged Out by Duquesne Dukes in East Regional Nail-Biter

In a closely contested first-round game of the East Regional, the Brigham Young University Cougars faced off against the Duquesne Dukes at CHI Health Center Omaha. The final score reflected the tight nature of the match, with the Dukes narrowly outscoring the Cougars 71-67. The BYU Cougars entered this game with a notable rank of 21 and showcased their competitive spirit throughout. Despite their efforts, they could not secure a win against an unranked but determined Duquesne team.

The BYU Cougars demonstrated resilience and teamwork, particularly in their assist-to-turnover ratio which stood at 1.45 with 16 assists to their name. Their free-throw accuracy was impressive as they made 88 percent of their shots from the line, converting 15 out of 17 attempts. From beyond the arc, they managed to sink eight three-pointers on a shooting percentage of 33 percent.


On defense, however, they struggled to contain Duquesne's offense which boasted a field goal percentage of 46 percent and converted half of their two-point attempts successfully. The Dukes also capitalized on fast-break opportunities scoring an impactful 20 points in transition compared to BYU's more modest total of 13 fast break points.

The rebounding battle was fiercely contested; while BYU outrebounded Duquesne with a total count of 35 rebounds including eight offensive boards that led to nine second-chance points for them – it wasn't enough to turn the tide in favor of them.


Duquesne's performance was highlighted by efficient ball movement resulting in thirteen assists and maintaining control over turnovers with only eleven lost possessions compared to twelve by BYU. They also showed defensive prowess by blocking seven shots and stealing possession seven times from BYU players.
