Panthers' Paint Domination Not Enough Against Flames' Fiery Perimeter
The Florida International Panthers, with a record of 0-0, faced off against the Liberty Flames in a closely contested battle that ended with the Panthers falling short by a score of 69-78. The game was marked by intense competition and several lead changes, ultimately leaving the Panthers searching for their first victory.
At Liberty Arena, the home court advantage seemed to play into the Flames' hands as they managed to secure more rebounds with a total of 37 compared to the Panthers' 30. Despite this disadvantage on the boards, Florida International showcased their strength inside by scoring 38 points in the paint. The team's efficiency from two-point range was evident as they shot an impressive 57 percent.
The Panthers also demonstrated aggressive defense throughout the game, accumulating eight steals and three blocks. However, discipline was an issue as they committed 13 personal fouls which contributed to one player being fouled out. On offense, Florida International distributed well with twelve assists but had difficulty maintaining possession at times which is reflected in their nine turnovers.
A standout performance came from beyond the arc where FIU sank nine three-pointers at a rate of 35 percent. This long-range effort complemented their inside game but wasn't enough to match Liberty's exceptional perimeter shooting; The Flames hit an outstanding sixteen three-pointers at a higher efficiency of 48 percent.
Liberty also capitalized on second-chance opportunities scoring sixteen points following offensive rebounds while FIU managed eight in that category. Both teams were equally fast on breaks contributing eight fast break points each.
Despite these efforts and leading at certain junctures during play – indicated by seven lead changes – it wasn't sufficient for FIU to clinch victory against Liberty who displayed superior ball distribution resulting in twenty-six assists and better overall shooting accuracy from both field goals (47 percent) and free throws (62 percent).
Looking ahead for Florida International fans, attention now turns towards an upcoming challenge as FIU will face Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at E.A Diddle Arena located in Bowling Green on January 25th at 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
