The Illinois Fighting Illini started strong with an initial half performance that saw them put up 36 points against the Volunteer's 34. However, despite their efforts and leading twice during the game, they were unable to maintain their momentum into the second half. The home team surged ahead with an impressive display of skill and coordination, scoring a dominant 52 points in comparison to Illinois' respectable but insufficient additional 43 points.

Offensively, Illinois showcased their ability from beyond the arc but struggled with consistency; they made nine three-pointers out of a total thirty-six attempted, resulting in a three-point percentage of just twenty-five percent. Inside the paint was another story where they managed to score twenty-four points. Their free throw accuracy was commendable as well; sinking twenty-four out of twenty-eight attempts gave them an eighty-six percent success rate from the line.

Defensively, Illinois gathered thirty-four rebounds throughout the game and executed five steals alongside two blocks. They also capitalized on turnovers by scoring sixteen points off those opportunities provided by Tennessee's mistakes.

On individual performances for Illinois: key players stepped up when needed but ultimately fell short against a well-rounded Volunteer team effort that included six steals and three blocks defensively along with an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of two point sixty-three compared to Illinois' one point thirteen.
