In front of an electrified crowd at the State Farm Center, the home team demonstrated robust offensive efforts. The Illinois Fighting Illini started strong with an impressive first half, outscoring their opponents by six points and ending it with a lead of 40-34. However, despite maintaining a high two-point shooting percentage at 54 percent throughout the game and converting free throws at an exceptional rate of 81 percent, they couldn't sustain their momentum into the second half.

The Illinois team showcased their ability to penetrate defenses by scoring an impressive total of 40 points in the paint. Their tenacity on offense was further highlighted by securing ten offensive rebounds which contributed to their total rebound count of 29. However, turnovers proved costly for them as they gave up possession twelve times.

On defense, Illinois managed to block one shot and made seven steals but ultimately fell short in containing Purdue's sharpshooters who hit nine three-pointers at a remarkable rate of fifty-six percent from beyond the arc. Despite these efforts and having tied scores three times during play along with three lead changes, it wasn't enough to secure victory over Purdue.

Purdue's performance was marked by efficient ball distribution which led to twenty assists and only eight turnovers for an assist-turnover ratio of two point five. They also capitalized on second-chance opportunities scoring fifteen points following up on their own misses.
