The contest took place at Imperial Arena in Nassau, where fans were treated to a competitive matchup. The Kansas Jayhawks started strong with 33 points in the first half but faced stiff competition as the Wisconsin Badgers rallied back with 43 points in the second half to push the game into overtime. Ultimately, it was Kansas' additional six points during overtime that sealed their win.

Key players for the Kansas Jayhawks included their top scorers and rebounders who contributed significantly to their victory. The team's overall shooting percentage stood at approximately 39 percent from the field and about 31 percent from beyond the arc. Despite struggling from the free-throw line with only around 57 percent accuracy, they managed to secure crucial baskets when it mattered most.

The defensive efforts of both teams were notable; however, it was Kansas' ability to dominate on rebounds that made a substantial difference. They outrebounded Wisconsin by grabbing an impressive total of 50 rebounds compared to Wisconsin's total of 35. This included both offensive and defensive boards which played a pivotal role in second-chance opportunities resulting in eleven second-chance points for Kansas.

Wisconsin put up a valiant fight throughout regulation time and into overtime but fell just short by one point despite having one remaining timeout which could have potentially changed their fortunes. Their standout statistics include shooting approximately 74 percent from free throws and making eight steals over Kansas' five steals during gameplay.
