Terrapins Edge Out Fighting Illini in Close Men's Basketball Contest at Xfinity Center

In a closely contested matchup at the Xfinity Center, the Maryland Terrapins emerged victorious over the Illinois Fighting Illini with a final score of 71-66. The Terrapins now hold a record of 22 wins and losses, while the Fighting Illini stand at 16.

The game was marked by several lead changes and both teams were tied five times throughout the contest. The Maryland Terrapins showcased their offensive skills by converting nine out of twenty-three three-point attempts, translating to an impressive 39 percent success rate from beyond the arc. Their overall field goal percentage stood at 44 percent with twenty-four successful shots out of fifty-four attempts.


Maryland's defense also played a crucial role in their victory, blocking three shots and making three steals during the game. They demonstrated efficiency on both ends of the court with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.9, slightly better than Illinois' ratio of 0.67.

On the rebounding front, Maryland gathered thirty-one rebounds – nineteen defensive and eight offensive – contributing to their second-chance points tally which stood at seven by game end.


Illinois Fighting Illini put up a strong fight as well; they dominated inside with forty-four points in paint compared to Maryland's twenty-eight and secured thirty-three total rebounds. Their two-point shooting was particularly effective with a conversion rate of approximately 54 percent from close range.


Despite these efforts, it was not enough to overcome Maryland's balanced attack and home-court advantage as evidenced by an attendance that filled nearly ninety-one percent capacity at Xfinity Center.
