Maryland Terrapins Edged Out at Home by Scarlet Knights in a Nail-Biter
The Maryland Terrapins, hosting the Scarlet Knights, found themselves on the wrong side of a closely contested battle that ended 56-53. The Terrapins' season record now stands at an even keel with equal numbers of victories and defeats, while the Scarlet Knights improved their tally with this latest win.
In front of a home crowd at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland's performance was marked by intense effort and moments of brilliance. Despite trailing by two points after the first half, they managed to keep pace with their opponents throughout the game. The Terrapins' defense managed to block two shots but struggled to contain Rutgers' offense which successfully blocked six attempts from Maryland.
The home team's shooting accuracy was less than ideal; they made 17 out of 54 field goal attempts resulting in a 32 percent success rate. From beyond the arc, they struggled significantly more, sinking only two out of 18 attempts which translated into an eleven percent completion rate for three-pointers. However, they fared better from the free-throw line where they scored seventeen out of twenty-three attempts giving them a seventy-four percent success rate.
Maryland's rebounding efforts were slightly superior as they collected thirty-eight rebounds compared to Rutgers' thirty-seven. They also capitalized on turnovers better than their opponents by scoring fourteen points off turnovers while Rutgers scored thirteen.
On offense for Maryland, ball distribution seemed challenging as evidenced by their six assists throughout the game compared to seven from Rutgers. Both teams had fifteen turnovers each; however, Maryland did not capitalize on these opportunities as effectively as their counterparts did.
The Scarlet Knights showed resilience and tactical acumen throughout both halves. Their field goal percentage stood at thirty-nine percent with twenty-two successful shots out of fifty-six attempts. They were particularly effective during free throws where they achieved an eighty-two percent success rate making nine out of eleven shots count.
Rutgers also demonstrated strength inside with thirty-two points scored in paint compared to twenty-six from Maryland and secured ten fast break points against six from the home team. Their defensive efforts resulted in eight steals and six blocks contributing significantly to their victory over Maryland.
