Can Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Bounce Back After Falling to Western Kentucky Hilltoppers?
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders faced a tough challenge against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, culminating in a score of 54-85. The Blue Raiders' season record now stands at an unmentioned number of wins and losses, while the Hilltoppers' record remains similarly unspecified. The semifinal clash at Von Braun Center saw the home team take a decisive victory.
From tip-off, the Blue Raiders struggled to find their rhythm against a formidable Hilltoppers defense. Despite putting up 27 points in both halves, they were unable to match the offensive output of their opponents who scored 46 and 39 points in each respective half. The Blue Raiders shot only 31 percent from the field compared to the Hilltoppers' more efficient 48 percent shooting performance.
Middle Tennessee's efforts were hampered by turnovers; they gave up possession on 18 occasions which led to 13 points for Western Kentucky off those turnovers. In contrast, while also committing turnovers (15), Western Kentucky capitalized more effectively with 22 points off turnovers.
The rebounding battle was another area where Middle Tennessee found themselves outmatched. They grabbed a total of 35 rebounds – eight offensive and twenty-five defensive – but this paled in comparison to Western Kentucky's total of forty-four rebounds which included seven from offensive glass.
Shooting accuracy from beyond the arc was another struggle for MTU as they made only seven out of twenty-seven three-point attempts, resulting in an underwhelming three-point percentage of twenty-six percent. Meanwhile, WKU demonstrated sharpshooting prowess by hitting eleven out of twenty-two attempts for an impressive fifty percent from downtown.
On individual performances, MTU players fought valiantly with one player fouling out but still managed four blocks and nine assists throughout the game. Their free throw shooting was notably higher than their overall field goal percentage at sixty-one percent but still fell short when compared to WKU's near-perfect ninety-two percent from the charity stripe.
Despite these challenges, MTU showed moments of promise with fast break plays that earned them seven points and second-chance opportunities contributing eight points thanks to their offensive rebounds.
