New Mexico Lobos Dominate San Jose State Spartans in Commanding Victory
The New Mexico Lobos, ranked 25th, delivered a powerful performance against the unranked San Jose State Spartans with a final score of 95-75. The Lobos now boast an impressive record of 14-4, while the Spartans fall to a challenging 7-11 season.
At the Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose, California, the visiting team showcased their offensive might right from tip-off. The first half saw the Lobos put up 43 points to the Spartans' 32. But it was in the second half where they truly pulled away, adding an additional 52 points to their tally compared to the Spartans' improved but insufficient 43.
The Lobos excelled across various aspects of play. They were particularly effective on fast breaks, scoring a notable 21 fast break points and demonstrating quick transitions that kept their opponents on their heels. Their defensive efforts were also commendable with a total of five blocks and eleven steals contributing significantly to disrupting Spartan plays.
Offensively, New Mexico's shooting was efficient from both inside and outside the arc. They made half of their two-point attempts (24 out of 48) and shot an impressive 53 percent from three-point range (10 out of 19). Free throws were less consistent at a rate of only about two-thirds successful (17 out of 26), leaving some room for improvement at the charity stripe.
Rebounding played a key role in this matchup as well; The Lobos gathered a total rebound count of thirty-five against thirty-four by San Jose State. This included nine offensive boards which led to sixteen second-chance points – another testament to New Mexico's tenacity on court.
On top of that, ball handling by UNM was exemplary with only six turnovers throughout game time while forcing eighteen on SJSU's side – leading directly to twenty-five points off turnovers for UNM compared to just four for SJSU.
San Jose State did have its moments though; they managed nine blocks and had nineteen assists over UNM's fifteen but struggled with ball security which proved costly against such an aggressive opponent like New Mexico.
