From the outset, the Ohio State Buckeyes demonstrated tenacity on both ends of the court at Minneapolis's Target Center. In an impressive display of offensive execution, they managed to put up 29 points in the first half and followed it with an even more potent performance after halftime by adding another 45 points to their tally. Their shooting was efficient from inside the arc as they made 26 out of 51 two-point attempts, translating to a solid 51 percent shooting rate.

Defensively, Ohio State showed prowess around the rim with five blocks and six steals contributing to their efforts. They also dominated on rebounds with a total count of 40 compared to Illinois' 44; however, it was their offensive rebounding that stood out as they grabbed an impressive total of thirteen boards leading to second-chance opportunities which resulted in seventeen second-chance points.

The team's distribution was noteworthy as well; fifteen assists were recorded throughout the game indicating good ball movement and teamwork. Despite this collaborative effort and maintaining control over turnovers with only eleven for themselves while forcing eleven from Illinois, foul trouble seemed to plague them as they racked up twenty-seven personal fouls leading to two players being fouled out.

On offense for Illinois Fighting Illini, free throws played a significant role where they capitalized by making twenty-one out of thirty-two attempts which is approximately sixty-six percent from the line – this proved crucial down the stretch. Their fast break play also edged them ahead slightly with ten fast break points against Ohio State's five.

As time wound down at Target Center – where neither team had home-court advantage – both teams were locked in an intense battle marked by eight ties and seven lead changes throughout regulation time before reaching its conclusion at exactly zero seconds left on clock decimal.
