In front of a packed Jersey Mike's Arena with 8,000 fans in attendance, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights struggled to find their rhythm against the Maryland Terrapins. Despite being on their home court in Piscataway, New Jersey, the Scarlet Knights could not capitalize on their fast break opportunities as effectively as they hoped, scoring only seven points from such plays compared to the Terrapins' four.

The defensive efforts of both teams were notable; however, it was Rutgers that edged out with eight blocks over Maryland's six and matched them with eight steals each. Yet personal fouls proved costly for Rutgers as they racked up 19 compared to Maryland's 15. This discrepancy was reflected at the free-throw line where Rutgers converted ten of their seventeen attempts (59 percent), while Maryland capitalized on fifteen out of twenty-four (62 percent).

Offensively for Rutgers, points in paint were slightly higher than Maryland at thirty versus twenty-eight respectively. However, shooting efficiency told another story; field goal percentages stood at 37 percent for Rutgers and 41 percent for Maryland. From beyond the arc, both teams struggled but again it was Maryland who fared better hitting six out of nineteen three-point attempts (32 percent) whereas Rutgers managed just two from eleven (18 percent).

Rutgers did show resilience under pressure by maintaining an almost even assists-turnover ratio at 0.75 despite thirteen turnovers throughout the game – just one shy of Maryland’s fourteen.
