Lobos Leap Over Aztecs in a Showdown at The Pit

In a clash of collegiate basketball titans, the San Diego State Aztecs, ranked 19th with an impressive record, faced off against the unranked New Mexico Lobos. Despite a valiant effort, the Aztecs fell short with a final score of 88-70. The defeat at The Pit in Albuquerque added another loss to their tally this season.

The game was marked by intense competition and pivotal moments that swayed momentum. The San Diego State Aztecs started strong with 37 points in the first half but were outpaced by the Lobos who put up 40 points. In the second half, despite adding another 33 points to their score, it wasn't enough to overcome the Lobos' surge of 48 additional points.

The Aztecs' performance showcased their resilience and teamwork with a total of 15 assists contributing to their overall score. However, they struggled from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line where they shot just 32 percent and an underwhelming 55 percent respectively. Inside the paint was where they found more success scoring a solid 32 points.

Defensively, San Diego State managed six steals but only one block compared to New Mexico's formidable defense which tallied up an imposing number of blocks at fourteen. Rebounding also proved challenging for the visiting team as they grabbed only six offensive rebounds while securing twenty-nine defensive ones for a total rebound count of thirty-seven against New Mexico's forty-seven.

One area where San Diego State capitalized was on turnovers; they scored eleven points off turnovers thanks to thirteen forced errors by New Mexico while committing thirteen themselves. However, this aggressive play led them into foul trouble resulting in twenty-two personal fouls and two flagrant fouls during game time.

Looking ahead for fans of San Diego State Aztecs basketball: your team will be hosting Nevada Wolf Pack at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl on January 17th at 8:00 PM local time (Pacific).
