Can San Diego State Aztecs Turn the Tide After Narrow Loss to UNLV?
The San Diego State Aztecs, ranked 21st, faced off against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels in a closely contested match that ended with a final score of 62-58. The Aztecs now hold a record of 21-5 while the Runnin' Rebels improved to 17-9.
In an intense battle at Thomas & Mack Center, the San Diego State Aztecs displayed a tenacious defensive effort with 10 steals and four blocks. Despite their aggressive defense, they struggled offensively, shooting only 28 percent from the field compared to UNLV's more efficient 40 percent. The Aztecs were also outrebounded by the Runnin' Rebels who grabbed a total of 42 rebounds over the Aztecs' 36.
The three-point line was one area where the Aztecs managed to match their opponents; both teams sank eleven shots from beyond the arc. However, it was in two-point territory that differences became apparent; San Diego State made only seven out of thirty-one attempts resulting in a mere twenty-three percent success rate.
San Diego State's free throw performance stood out as they converted eleven out of fifteen attempts which rounds up to seventy-three percent accuracy. This was significantly better than UNLV's sixty-seven percent from the charity stripe.
Offensively for San Diego State, points in paint were hard to come by with just twelve points scored inside compared to twenty-two by UNLV. However, they capitalized on turnovers scoring sixteen points off them and also showed resilience on second-chance opportunities notching sixteen second-chance points.
Despite these efforts and leading at halftime with twenty-eight points over UNLV's thirty-three, it wasn't enough as they scored thirty points in the second half against UNLV's twenty-nine but still fell short overall.
