Cardinal Clipped by Huskies' Sharp Shooting at Alaska Airlines Arena
In a display of competitive collegiate basketball, the Stanford Cardinal faced a tough opponent in the Washington Huskies. The Cardinal entered the game with an unblemished rank and left with a record of 0-1 after succumbing to the Huskies' offensive onslaught, ending with a final score of 65-85.
The Cardinal started strong, putting up 38 points in the first half but struggled to maintain their momentum into the second half, adding only 27 more to their tally. Despite shooting an impressive 90 percent from the free-throw line and making nine out of ten attempts, it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Huskies. The team's field goal percentage stood at 40 percent with twenty-four successful shots out of sixty attempts. From beyond the arc, they managed to sink eight out of twenty-seven three-pointers, rounding off their three-point shooting at thirty percent.
Stanford's defense managed to block three shots and steal possession six times over the course of play. However, they were less effective on rebounds than their opponents; while they grabbed thirty-three rebounds in total—twenty-seven defensive and six offensive—their efforts fell short compared to Washington's thirty-five.
Offensively, Stanford saw contributions across its lineup but was hindered by seventeen turnovers which translated into ten points for Washington. Their assists-turnover ratio was low at 0.41 due to only seven assists throughout the game. Points in paint were another area where Stanford showed strength with twenty-six points scored close to basket.
On contrast, Washington capitalized on turnovers scoring twenty-seven points off them and dominated fast break situations racking up twenty-two fast break points against Stanford's three. The home team also excelled inside scoring forty-four paint points which contributed significantly towards their higher overall field goal percentage of fifty-four percent.
The game saw seven ties and thirteen lead changes indicating that despite what scoreboard suggests there were moments when both teams had opportunities for dominance.
