UAB Blazers Narrowly Edged Out by San Diego State Aztecs in Spokane

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers faced a tough challenge against the 24th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs, culminating in a close contest with a final score of 69-65. The Blazers' season record now stands at 0-1, while the Aztecs improve to 1-0.

The game was held at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, where both teams fought hard through two halves of intense basketball action. The UAB Blazers started strong, ending the first half with 29 points to their name but trailed behind as the Aztecs secured 35 points. In an effort to bounce back, UAB managed to add another 36 points in the second half; however, it wasn't enough to overcome their opponents who scored an additional 34 points.


UAB's performance showcased resilience and determination. They made good use of their chances from beyond the arc with a three-point shooting percentage of 35 and were successful on three-quarters of their free throw attempts. Despite this accuracy from the line and securing seven three-pointers throughout the game, they struggled with field goals making only 38 percent compared to San Diego State's more efficient rate of 44 percent.


Defensively, UAB managed two blocks and seven steals but gave up five points off turnovers. On offense, they recorded ten assists but had an assists turnover ratio lower than one (0.71), indicating challenges in maintaining possession which resulted in fourteen turnovers for them.


Rebounding was fiercely contested; UAB grabbed a total of thirty-three rebounds including eight offensive boards contributing to nine second-chance points. However, they were outdone slightly by San Diego State who collected thirty-five rebounds overall.


Key players for UAB contributed significantly despite falling short on victory: thirteen two-point field goals were made out of thirty-three attempts resulting in a completion rate just shy under forty percent for shots within the arc and twenty-two points came from inside paint showing some dominance near the basket.
