Can the Knights' Paint Dominance Overcome Cyclones' Perimeter Defense?
In a closely contested conference game at Addition Financial Arena, the University of Central Florida Knights fell short against the Iowa State Cyclones with a final score of 52-60. The Cyclones improved their record to 8-0, while the Knights now stand at 0-8. Despite a valiant effort, UCF could not capitalize on their home-court advantage in Orlando.
The Knights showcased their strength inside by outscoring the Cyclones in points in the paint with an impressive tally of 36. They also demonstrated tenacity on defense with 10 steals throughout the game. However, this defensive effort was not enough to secure victory as they struggled from beyond the arc, converting only one out of 19 three-point attempts for a meager five percent shooting.
UCF's aggressive playstyle resulted in drawing fouls and earning free throws but they were only able to make 11 out of their 18 attempts from the charity stripe which translates to a free throw percentage of just over sixty-one percent. The team's rebounding was strong as they collected more total rebounds than Iowa State with a count of 31 compared to Iowa State's 26.
On offense, UCF had difficulty maintaining possession and ended up turning over the ball an alarming number of times totaling at twenty-two for this matchup. This contributed significantly to Iowa State scoring twenty-two points off turnovers despite having seventeen turnovers themselves.
Iowa State capitalized on its opportunities from outside by making five three-pointers and showed efficiency inside as well by making sixteen out two-point attempts which is sixty-four percent successful shots from that range. Their overall field goal percentage stood at forty-six percent after sinking twenty-one field goals during playtime.
The Cyclones also displayed better ball distribution with sixteen assists compared to UCF's five assists and managed nine steals contributing heavily towards their fast break points where they edged out UCF ten to seven.
