UNLV Runnin' Rebels Edge Out New Mexico Lobos in a Close Encounter at The Pit

The UNLV Runnin' Rebels secured a narrow victory over the New Mexico Lobos with a final score of 80-77. The game, which took place at The Pit in Albuquerque, saw the Runnin' Rebels maintain their unranked status while handing the 25th-ranked Lobos another defeat to add to their record.

The first half was closely contested, with UNLV putting up 39 points against New Mexico's 40. However, it was the second half where the Runnin' Rebels showed resilience and determination by outscoring their opponents with an additional 41 points to the Lobos’ 37. This effort ultimately led to their triumph.


UNLV's performance was marked by impressive inside play, as they dominated points in the paint with a total of 48 compared to New Mexico's 26. Their shooting from two-point range was particularly effective; they made an outstanding 53 percent of these shots. Despite being less successful from beyond the arc – hitting only two out of eight attempts for a three-point shooting percentage of just 25 percent – it did not deter them from pursuing victory.


Defensively, UNLV managed six blocks and four steals during the game. They also showed tenacity on both ends of the court by grabbing a total of 39 rebounds; nine offensive and thirty defensive rebounds contributed significantly to maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities.


On offense, free throws were crucial for UNLV as they made eighteen out of twenty-five attempts, achieving an accuracy rate of seventy-two percent from the line. This proved vital in securing their three-point lead over New Mexico when final buzzers sounded.


The team’s discipline could be seen through committing only eleven turnovers throughout entire match-up while forcing ten on part opposition - showcasing strong ball control under pressure situations.


New Mexico’s efforts were notable too; they excelled in fast-break situations scoring twenty-three fast break points and were more prolific from three-point land making forty percent (eight made) from distance. However, despite having more total rebounds than UNLV at forty-one and blocking more shots (nine), they couldn't convert these advantages into enough points on scoreboard.
