Cougars Claw Back to Edge Out Trojans in a Nail-Biter at Beasley Coliseum

In a closely contested battle at Beasley Coliseum, the USC Trojans faced off against the Washington State Cougars, with both teams demonstrating formidable skill on the court. The Trojans, who did not have a rank going into this game, put up 72 points against the 19th-ranked Cougars' 75. The first half saw the Trojans lead with 39 points to the Cougars' 35, but by the end of the second half, they were outscored by seven points resulting in a final score of 72-75.

The USC Trojans showcased an impressive offensive effort with a field goal percentage of 52 and converting an outstanding 60 percent from two-point range. Their prowess in scoring was particularly evident in their points in paint totaling an impressive 46. Despite their efforts from within close range, they struggled beyond the arc making only two out of ten three-point attempts for a low three-point shooting percentage of just twenty percent.


Defensively, USC made their presence felt with eleven steals and four blocks while committing seventeen personal fouls throughout the game. They managed to gather twenty-seven rebounds; nineteen defensive and eight offensive which included one team rebound. However, ball control proved challenging as evidenced by their eleven turnovers during play.

On individual performances for USC: players showed strong coordination on offense matching their eleven assists with eleven player turnovers resulting in an assist-to-turnover ratio of one. Free throw opportunities were capitalized upon to some extent as sixteen out of twenty-four attempts found success translating into sixty-seven percent from the charity stripe.


The Washington State Cougars also had notable statistics including ten three-pointers made on fifty percent shooting from downtown and maintaining fifty percent overall field goal efficiency. They edged past USC slightly in rebounds grabbing twenty-seven personal rebounds along with seven offensive boards matching that of USC's total count but surpassing them slightly on defensive rebounds at twenty compared to nineteen.

As for ball handling and teamwork, WSU recorded fourteen assists despite committing more turnovers than USC with fourteen player turnovers leading to an assist-to-turnover ratio slightly better than that of Trojan's at one point zero eight. Additionally, they leveraged sixteen points off turnovers compared to twelve by USC which contributed significantly to their narrow victory margin.
