The game, held at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, saw the home team Virginia Tech Hokies take control early on. The first half ended with the Hokies leading by eight points, and they continued their dominance into the second half by adding another forty points to their score. Their shooting was particularly effective; they achieved a field goal percentage of sixty-four percent and were especially lethal from two-point range, hitting an outstanding eighty-two percent of those shots.

The Virginia Tech players showcased remarkable teamwork with twenty-three assists contributing to their seventy-seven total points. They also demonstrated strong defensive skills with five blocks and four steals during the game. The rebounding battle was won by the Hokies as well, grabbing thirty rebounds compared to twenty-three by their opponents.

On offense, Virginia Tech capitalized on turnovers scoring fifteen points off them and maintained a high assists-to-turnover ratio of three point twenty-nine. In contrast, despite shooting fifty-three percent from beyond the arc and making eight three-pointers, American University could not keep pace with only two points off turnovers and an assists-to-turnover ratio of one point eighty-six.

The Eagles did manage to put up some resistance; they scored nine second-chance points and had thirteen assists on their fifty-five total points but struggled from both free throw line (forty-six percent) and two-point range (thirty-three percent). Their efforts were not enough against a determined Virginia Tech squad that seemed unstoppable in painting where they scored forty-eight points.

Fans who witnessed this game at Cassell Coliseum saw a solid performance from both teams but ultimately watched as Virginia Tech secured its first victory of the season before an audience of four thousand eight hundred eighty-six attendees.
