The Virginia Tech Hokies faced a challenging contest against the North Carolina Tar Heels, culminating in a high-scoring affair that ended 96-81 in favor of the home team. The Hokies' record now stands at 0-1, while the Tar Heels improve to 1-0. The game was characterized by an offensive showcase from both squads, with the Dean Smith Center witnessing a combined total of 177 points on the scoreboard.

The Virginia Tech Hokies entered the second half with a deficit after scoring 39 points to North Carolina's commanding 50. Despite ramping up their efforts and adding another 42 points to their tally, it wasn't enough to close the gap created by North Carolina's consistent scoring. The Hokies showcased remarkable accuracy from the charity stripe, sinking an impressive 90 percent of their free throws.

Virginia Tech's offense was fueled by contributions across the board, with two-point field goals accounting for over half of their attempts and yielding a solid conversion rate of around 51 percent. From beyond the arc, they managed to net seven three-pointers at a rate of approximately 27 percent. In terms of ball movement and teamwork, they dished out a total of 13 assists throughout the game.

Defensively, Virginia Tech managed to gather five steals and block three shots but struggled on rebounds against North Carolina's taller lineup which dominated with both defensive rebounds (22) and offensive boards (7). This rebounding disparity contributed significantly to second-chance opportunities for North Carolina who capitalized with an additional nine points from such plays.

On offense for North Carolina Tar Heels, they were able to convert more effectively inside than their opponents did outside; they scored over half their points in paint (54) while also maintaining higher shooting percentages across all categories compared to Virginia Tech – including field goals made at about twice as many attempts (35 out of approximately double attempts). Their assist-to-turnover ratio stood just below that set by Virginia Tech but still reflected strong team play nonetheless.
