The West Virginia Mountaineers, unranked this season, displayed a determined effort against the 24th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers. Despite their tenacity, they fell short by 12 points in a game that saw no lead changes or ties. The Mountaineers scored 32 points in the first half and improved slightly with 36 in the second half but could not overcome Purdue's consistent scoring.

West Virginia's offense was led by their two-point shooting, which matched Purdue's efficiency at over fifty percent success rate. However, their three-point attempts were less fruitful with only five made from twenty-two attempts – a mere twenty-three percent conversion rate. On defense, they managed to secure nine steals but were unable to register any blocks throughout the game.

The team showed strength on fast breaks with eighteen fast break points and matched Purdue’s fourteen second chance points. They also had an edge in assists-to-turnover ratio at 1.09 compared to Purdue’s lower ratio of 0.88.

On personal performance metrics, West Virginia committed one more foul than their opponents for a total of twenty-three fouls and had one player foul out during playtime. Their free throw performance lagged behind significantly as well; they made eleven out of seventeen free throws which translated into sixty-five percent completion – markedly lower than Purdue’s impressive eighty-six percent from the line.

Purdue showcased strong offensive skills throughout both halves of play scoring forty-three and thirty-seven respectively while maintaining higher overall shooting percentages across field goals and three-point shots compared to West Virginia.

The Boilermakers capitalized on turnovers scoring seventeen points off them despite committing eighteen turnovers themselves – just six more than West Virginia’s twelve total turnovers for the game.
