West Virginia Mountaineers and St. John's Red Storm Clash at WVU Coliseum in Men's Basketball Showdown

In a closely contested game at the WVU Coliseum, the West Virginia Mountaineers faced off against the St. John's Red Storm in a non-conference men's basketball matchup. The final score reflected the intensity of the competition, with St. John's edging out a victory over West Virginia with scores of 79-73.

The West Virginia Mountaineers started strong, matching their opponents point for point in the first half, both teams securing 36 points before heading into halftime. However, despite their efforts and leading on several occasions throughout the game with seven lead changes witnessed, they could not maintain their momentum against a determined Red Storm side.


The home team showcased resilience on defense with four blocks to their name but were outdone by St. John's who managed eight blocks during playtime. The Mountaineers also recorded three steals over the course of action compared to two from their adversaries.


Offensively, West Virginia made 19 field goals from 48 attempts resulting in an approximate shooting percentage of 40 percent from the field which was slightly better than St. John’s overall field goal percentage of approximately 42 percent; however, they fell short in converting two-point shots making only about 40 percent compared to approximately 52 percent by St. John’s.


From beyond the arc, West Virginia showed efficiency hitting four three-point shots out of ten attempts giving them an impressive forty percent success rate from downtown which was notably higher than that of St. John’s who managed seven successful three-point shots from twenty-seven attempts translating to roughly twenty-six percent accuracy.


At free throw line though it was another story as both teams had similar performances; West Virginia made thirty-one free throws out of forty-three taken while St. Johns converted fourteen out of twenty attempted free throws both achieving around seventy-two and seventy percent respectively.


Rebounding was one area where The Mountaineers held an advantage pulling down thirty-nine rebounds including twelve offensive boards contributing to twelve second-chance points whereas The Red Storm collected thirty-seven rebounds seventeen being offensive ones leading them to score twenty-six second-chance points.


Despite this effort by The Mountaineers they struggled with turnovers committing twelve against six by The Red Storm which translated into eleven points off turnovers for visitors while home side could only manage three points off turnovers themselves further highlighting challenges faced during this encounter.
