In a closely contested first half at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena, the West Virginia Mountaineers trail the Virginia Cavaliers by a narrow margin of 23-26. The Mountaineers, unranked this season, are putting up a strong fight against the 24th-ranked Cavaliers in this Beach Division - Consolation Game.

Virginia Cavaliers VS West Virginia Mountaineers

The West Virginia Mountaineers have been assertive on the boards with a total of 23 rebounds compared to their opponents' 13. Despite their efforts, turnovers have been an issue for the home team with ten lost possessions which is double that of the Cavaliers. The rebounding effort was led by their offensive grabs totaling seven, contributing to five second-chance points.

Offensively, shooting has been challenging for both teams; however, West Virginia's field goal percentage stands at 32 percent from an attempt count of 28 shots. Their three-point attempts have not found much success either with only one made out of nine tries resulting in an eleven percent completion rate. On a brighter note, they have capitalized on free throws making four out of five attempts which translates to an eighty percent success rate.

The defensive efforts from both teams are evident through blocks and steals during this intense matchup. The Mountaineers managed one block and two steals while holding personal fouls to just three compared to six by the Cavaliers who also recorded three blocks and six steals themselves.

As for individual performances from West Virginia players, they've shown resilience against a tough opponent but will need to improve their assist-to-turnover ratio which currently stands at point three due to only three assists against ten turnovers.

Looking ahead after halftime adjustments and regrouping strategies will be crucial for both teams as they seek victory in this competitive game marked by seven ties and ten lead changes thus far.

The next challenge for the West Virginia Mountaineers will be facing off against Bellarmine Knights at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on November 26th. Fans can catch all live action broadcasted over ESPN+ starting at 5:00 PM Eastern Time as these two teams take center stage once again.
