Mountaineers Grapple with Longhorns at Moody Center, Fall Short in Conference Game
The West Virginia Mountaineers faced a challenging contest against the Texas Longhorns, culminating in a 58-94 defeat. The Mountaineers now stand with an unbalanced record, while the Longhorns improved their standing. The first half saw the Mountaineers put up 30 points to the Longhorns' dominant 55-point performance. In the second half, West Virginia added another 28 points but couldn't contain Texas as they extended their lead by scoring 39 additional points.
At Austin's Moody Center, a crowd of 10,073 spectators witnessed a game where the West Virginia Mountaineers struggled to find their rhythm against a formidable Texas defense. The Mountaineers managed to block two shots and steal twice from their opponents but were outperformed by Texas who tallied six blocks and eight steals throughout the game. Despite these efforts, West Virginia was unable to curb turnovers which totaled fifteen for them compared to just five for Texas.
West Virginia's shooting percentages reflected their tough night; they shot only 38 percent from field goals and an even lower three-point percentage at 23 percent. Their free throw attempts gave them some respite as they made thirteen out of twenty-one attempts translating into a free throw percentage of approximately sixty-two percent. Points in paint were tied at thirty each for both teams showing that inside scoring was evenly matched despite the overall score disparity.
The rebounding battle was narrowly won by West Virginia with thirty-seven total rebounds over Texas's thirty-six; however this small advantage did not translate into control of the game flow or outcome. Offensively and defensively speaking, both teams grabbed similar numbers of rebounds with twenty-five defensive and twelve offensive combined for West Virginia.
